Placement and Promotion

ELTI students are expected to know the English alphabet, be able to write simple sentences and speak about basic topics before arrival at the ELTI. Students who do not have basic English ability may need to find private tutoring to supplement their ELTI Level One classes.

All new students are tested at New Student Orientation to determine their listening, speaking, grammar, reading and writing skills in English, and then placed in the appropriate level (Level 1 – Level 6; beginner to advanced). After one week, teachers meet to review all placements and to ensure that all students are working at the level most suitable for them.  Placement for following terms depend on final grades at the end of each semester. Students must receive passing grades (C or higher) in all three classes in order to move to the next level of the program.
